• Section 80CCD(1B): An additional exclusive deduction of up to ₹50,000 is allowed for NPS investments, raising the total possible tax deduction to ₹2 Lakhs.

Difference between Tier-I and Tier-II accounts

NPS accounts are classified into two tiers:

• Tier-I Account (Mandatory): This is the core retirement account with strict withdrawal rules. It qualifies for all tax benefits under Section 80C/80CCD, but contributions are locked in until retirement (age 60).
• Tier-II Account (Voluntary): This is a voluntary investment account. You can withdraw your money at any time. It has no lock-in period but does not qualify for any tax benefits.
